The EU has prohibited imports of many varieties of GM cereals and has put on hold the expansion of commercial plantings of genetically modified crops in some member states. It argues that there is insufficient scientific evidence to conclude there is no risk to consumers from genetically modified foodstuffs, or to the environment from such crops.
