Psephurus gladius: boasts a body length of 2-3m (7.5m at most) and a body weight of 200-300kg. Also known as the Chinese paddlefish, or Chinese swordfish, it is the largest fresh-water fish in China and falls within the polyodontidae the same as the polyodon spathula living in the Mississippi. Since its long mouth looks like a trunk, it is also known as the elephant fish. It is mainly endemic to the trunk and branches of the Yangtze River from Yibin to the estuary, with some trace in the Qiantang River and the lower reaches of the Yellow River. It is a kind of rare species specific to China and enjoying the national first-class protection as a wild animal. With the existing reserve on the decline year by year, it has becomes an endangered species, and is also known as the "giant panda of the water".
