With its long history and unique culture, it was settled roughly 7,000 years ago and is the origin of Hemudu Culture. Ningbo is an economic center of Zhejiang province, and was amongst China’s first coastal cities to lift isolationism. The city is the eastern departure port of the Maritime Silk Road, and in modern times is a port city of international importance. It is commonly considered the cradle of Chinese academia.
