第部分阅读理解第一节 (共15题;每小题分,满分分)

You probably know you should say "please" and "thank you" at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners? Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears. So even if you are alone when listening to your MP3 players, you shouldn’t turn it up too high. Take Them Off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 off and put it away. Libraries and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense(无意义) to listen on your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came. Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone. It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you. 31. The underlined word "volume" in Paragraph 2 probably means "_________." A. the type of music B. the length of a song C. the amount(数量) of a sound D. the color of an MP3 player 32. We should turn down the music when we are alone because loud music_________. A. may annoy others B. will make us tired C. is bad for MP3 players D. can hurt our ears

33. If we listen to our MP3 player at a play, _________. A. the theatre won’t allow it B. we may miss part of the play C. others won’t hear the play well D. the actors will get angry

34. The main idea of this passage is about _________. A. music lovers B. music manners

C. music players D. MP3 earphones

The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of 2 September 1666. In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives.

The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King’s baker in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.

By eight o’clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul’s and the Guildhall among them.

Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire. People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat.

The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.

After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect(建筑师), wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets are still narrow(狭窄的); but he did build more than fifty churches, among them was new St Paul’s.

The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past.

35. It seems that the writer of the text was most sorry for the fact that ______. A. many famous buildings were destroyed

B. the birds in the sky were killed by the fire C. too many people lost their lives

D. the King’s bakery was burned down

B. Because Pepys also wrote about the fire. C. To give the reader a clearer picture of the fire.

D. To show that poor people suffered most.

37. How was the fire put out according to the text?

A. Houses standing in the direction of the fire were pulled down.

B. All the wooden houses in the city were destroyed. C. People managed to get enough water from the river.

D. The king and his soldiers came to help.

38. Which of the following is not the reason for the rapid spread (扩散)of the big fire? A. There was a strong wind. B. The streets were very narrow. C. Many houses were made of wood. D. There was not enough water in the city.

It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors(参赛者) have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hand anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.

This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of other people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the “handathon” contest(摸车比赛) is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person the car.

It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else—someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.

Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean(倚靠,斜靠) on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.

Maybe the popularity of the handathon is because of the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained player to enter. Players in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something at the end.

Handathons are competitions(比赛), but there is little rivalry (敌对) between the competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spirits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement for those still standing.

39 .The reason why the sport is called “handathon” is probably that _____ in the competition.

A. people cover a long distance

B. people keep hands in place long

C. people wave hands as long as possible

D. people do the same thing as in marathon

40. What ability is likely to be most needed in handathon?

A. Standing without any support.

B. Paying attention to not leaning on the car.

C. Eating and drinking in five minutes.

D. Having strong powers of attention

41. Why is handathon popular?

A. Someone can win with special training.

B. It doesn’t need to make any preparation.

C. Anyone who is interested can join in it.

D. People get along well with each other in it.

D

Two traveling angels (天使) stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement(地下室). As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied: “Things aren’t always what they seem.”

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor but very hospitable (好客的) farmer. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their only income(收入), lay dead in the field.

The younger angel was very angry and asked the older angel, “How could this happen?” “Why didn’t you watch out for the cow? The first man had everything, yet you watched over his house,” she accused(指责). “The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you did not help.”

“Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the basement, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so greedy(贪婪的) and unwilling to share his good fortune(财产), I asked God if I could seal(封口)the wall so he couldn’t find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I asked God if the angel could take the cow instead. Things aren’t always what they seem.”

. Why did the older angel repair the hole for the rich family?

A. Because she believed that one should always be ready to offer help.

B. Because she wanted to save the gold for the poor.

C. Because the basement was too cold to stay in.

D. Because she didn’t like the greedy owner.

43. In paragraph two, the pair refers to(指的是) _____________.

作文

My Favourite Teacher

I have had many teachers in my life, but Mr Wang, my present English teacher, is my favourite.

Mr Wang is tall and thin. It is said that he is in his forties, but he looks very young. He is always so kind to us students that he is just like our father. He has different ways of teaching in class, so we find his class lively and interesting. He always encourages us to speak English in class and never be afraid of making mistakes. Thanks to his excellent teaching, I have made rapid progress in my English.

Mr Wang is such a good teacher that we all respect him very much. In fact, he is considered as one of the most popular teachers in my school.
