Ⅱ.阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Plants that live in the rainforest have adapted in amazing ways to several very difficult conditions. This means that the plant has changed something in its “body” or “habits” to make it easier to survive in difficult conditions. There are several conditions they have had to adapt to.First, the soil of the forest floor is shallow. Also, the soil of the rainforest is not very rich,or easy to grow in.Next is the problem of very heavy rain which continues over a large part of the year. Finally, many plants of the rainforest are food for animals that live there.
The biggest problem that rainforest plants have to adapt to is the lack of sunlight in the rainforest’s lower levels.Plants have adapted to this problem in several ways. Many plants have very large leaves. The large leaf is helpful because it has a bigger surface area. The bigger surface area a leaf has,the more sunlight it can absorb. The canopy trees adapt by growing to be 100 feet tall so that their leaves can grab all available sunlight.Other plants called lianas (climbing woody vines) have adapted by rooting themselves in the soil of the forest floor and growing up the trees until they reach the canopy layer.Still other plants, such as epiphytes, have adapted by growing directly on the trees’trunks and branches in the canopy and understory layers of the rainforest.
An adaptation to the large amounts of rainfall that many rainforest plants have is called “drip tips”.Their leaves are tapered (逐渐变细) to a sharp point at the end. This allows water to run off the leaf quickly. There are many other adaptations that rainforest plants have made to their environment. These will be discussed in detail,as we investigate the plants of the rainforest!
26.Which of the following is a difficulty that the rainforest plants have to face?

D.water’s running off the leaves quickly

Some people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you have known them half your life. These people have something in common. And once we know what it is,we can try to do it ourselves.
How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have.If you follow the skills, they’ll help you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.
First of all, good talkers ask questions.Almost anyone,no matter how shy he is,will answer a question. One wellknown businesswoman says,“At business lunches,I always ask people what they did that morning. It’s a common question, but it will get things going.” From there you can move on to other matters—sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.
Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn’t.Your questions should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are talking to.And to find out,you really have to listen carefully and attentively.
Real listening at least means some things.First it means not to change the subject of conversation. If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he’s really interested in it.Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then,it’s time for you to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occasion of parting. If you’re saying goodbye, you may give him a firm handshake and say,“I’ve really enjoyed meeting you.” If you want to see that person again, don’t keep it a secret.Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they’ve known you half their life.
31.Asking questions might be a quite good and suitable way ________.
A.for you to make more and more new friends
B.to begin your business talks
C.to get the conversation going smoothly
D.for you to make a deep and lasting impression on others

In many Asian countries, the left hand is considered unclean.Historically, lefthanded people have been given a hard time in the West as well.In some European languages, for instance, words for “left” are derived from words that mean “weak”,“evil”,etc.
Nowadays, fortunately, the greatest difficulty lefties have is always speculated about why so many people are lefties. The old theory of handedness suggests that humans are largely righthanders as a matter of convenience. In ancient times, mothers could have gotten into the habit of holding babies on their left sides in order to soothe (安慰) them with the sound of a beating heart. As a result, the only hand available for performing other tasks would have been the right.
With the recent research, many scientists have turned to a genetic model to explain handedness. To put it simply, you either have the gene for being a righty,or you do not. This theory still needs to be refined,as it does not account for the fact that twothirds of all lefties are born to righthanded parents,or that identical twins sometimes favor opposite hands.
Another theory, based on studies of chimpanzees (黑猩猩),suggests that handedness is related to birth order.Scientists have long been aware that the firstborn and lastborn chimpanzees in a family are more likely to suffer from developmental problems. These chimps are also the most likely to be lefthanded. The implication is that if something goes wrong before the chimpanzee is born, this might be reflected later in its hand preference.
Does this mean that lefties are more closely related to chimpanzees than the rest of us? Certainly not. What is interesting to note, however,is that without the bias towards the right in the human brain, there is more unusual brain organization. This correlates (与……有关系) to more lefthanded people occupying top and bottom places on the scale of human ability, and fewer in the middle.
As a result, lefties are more likely than righthanders to be musicians, members of highIQ societies, and U.S.presidents.
41.Nowadays lefties may feel uncomfortable because
________.
A.the left hand is considered unclean
B.people who use left hand are considered weak or even evil
C.the ordinary tools are not convenient for them to use
D.lefties are considered less intelligent than righthanders
42.If a man is lefthanded,his brain ________.
A.is more similar to the brain of chimpanzees
B.is the same as the brains of righthanded people
C.has more unusual brain organization than that of the righthanders
D.has developed better than any righthanded people’s brain
43.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Scientists have managed to explain people’s lefthanded habit by a genetic model.
B.The old theory of handedness is not reasonable.
C.So far,no theory has completely explained handedness.
D.Lefties can be more likely to become successful.
44.It can be concluded from the studies of chimpanzees about handedness that ________.
A.there are more lefties in chimpanzees’ family
B.the handedness of chimpanzees is most likely related with humans
C.developmental problems before the birth of chimpanzees will influence their handedness
D.lefthanded chimpanzees may be less intelligent
45.How many explanations about lefties are referred to in the passage?
A.3. B.4. C.5. D.6.

Dear boys and girls,
It’s my great honour to make a speech here.Recently, the People’s Bank of China conducted a quarterly survey on prices in 50 cities.Nearly half of the respondents said they couldn’t tolerate the increasing prices, while some others considered it OK although they acknowledged the truth. As a result, many families began to seek various ways to save money.
The survey does draw my attention to the rapidly increasing prices in my daily life.Take food as an example, the prices of pork, beef, fish, chicken,as well as various vegetables, have risen at least 20%.It seems that money is flowing out of our pockets more quickly, but silently.
Although we middle school students feel less stress than our parents do,we should also have a proper budget for our pocket money. For example,we can make the most of each exercise book and reuse some waste paper.Or we can also try to cut down our expenses on unnecessary magazines,CDs and so on.In a word,we can save money in many aspects in our daily life.
All in all, saving money is a great Chinese virtue and it is especially needed in this period.Thank you!
