There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe that they can’t help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths:

I’ll never lose weight—I come from a fat family

Wrong! While we can’t change the body type we are born with, we can’t blame our genes for making us fat. There’s plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercising too little.

I am fat because I burn calories slowly

Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism(新陈代谢). In fact, although fat people consume more energy than slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat! Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately.

Exercise is boring

Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it repetitively. The key is to develop a balanced and varied programme that’s fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a distance or time challenge.

No pain, no gain

Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but this is your body adapting to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly. If they don’t, rest and seek medical advice.

40. What does the author think about being fat?

A. It is the family genes that make people fat.

B. People are fat because they consume too little energy.

C. A diary of exercise can prevent people from becoming fat.

D. It is the consequence of people’s unbalanced lifestyle.

41. According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting?

A. By taking varied exercise.

B. By choosing simple exercise.

C. By doing regular exercise.

D. By sticking to outdoor exercise.

42. What is the author’s opinion about “No pain, no gain” in exercising?

A. Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience.

B. Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt.

C. Pain in exercise is a precondition for reaching your goal.

D. Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body.

43. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To declare the importance of keeping fit.

B. To clarify some misconceptions about fatness and exercise.

C. To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit.

D. To explain some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise.

Dear Gregory,

Merry Christmas! You are now the proud owner of an iPhone. You are a good and responsible 13-year-old boy and you deserve this gift. But with your acceptance of this present come some rules and regulations. Please read through the following list of rules. I hope that you understand that it is my job to form you into a well-rounded, healthy young man who can coexist with technology without being ruled by it. Failure to comply(遵守) with the following list will result in termination(终止) of your iPhone ownership.

1.It is my phone. I bought it. I paid for it. I am loaning(借) it to you. Aren’t I the greatest?

2.If it rings, answer it. It is a phone. Say hello and use your manners. Do not ever ignore a phone call if the screen reads “Mum” and “Dad”.

3.It does not go to school with you. Have conversations with your friends in person. That’s an important life skill. But half days, field trips and after school activities will require special consideration.

4.If it falls into the toilet, breaks up on the ground or disappears into thin air, you are responsible for the replacement or repair costs. Mow lawns, take up babysitting or save up your birthday money. Accidents will happen, so you should be prepared.

5.Turn it off, silence it and put it away in public—especially in a restaurant, at the movies or while speaking with another human being. You are not a rude person. Do not allow your new toy to change that.

6.Live within your experiences. They will be stored in your memory forever. Don’t take too many pictures and videos. There is no need to document everything.

7.Learn to live without it. Be bigger and more powerful than your “FOMO”—fear of missing out.Leave your phone at home sometimes and feel safe and secure in that decision. It is not alive, nor is it an extension of your body.

8.Keep your eyes up. See the world happening around you. Stare out a window. Listen to the birds. Take a walk. Won 2017年吉林高考英语完型填空专题模拟16der without Googling.

9.If you mess up,I will take away your phone. We will sit down and talk about it. We will start over again. You and I,we are always learning. I am on your side and we are in this together.

Love,

Mum
