Many Japanese never take their vacations they should enjoy, but with the coming of “Golden Week”, a series(系列) of holidays following one after another in late April and early May, they pour out of the country by tens of thousands. The most popular place they go to is Hawaii, but Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan are also favoured. The typical Japanese abroad, as it is reported, travel for about a week and spends, as average, $2, 800 on airline tickets, hotels and gifts for friends and relatives. Last week the manager of an old jeweler’s shop received a letter marked “personal”, so of course his secretary gave it to him unopened. As he was very busy, the letter lay on his desk till tea-time. Then he opened it and a £10 note fell out onto his desk. With the note was a short letter. This is what it said:
Dear sir,
In 1935 I got engaged. But unfortunately at that time there was a lot of unemployment and I lost my job. I was six months without a job and then I got work again. But of course was very short of money. I came to your shop to buy a wedding ring. The assistant brought some rings for me to look at, but she was called away for a moment, and I put one of the rings in my pocket. When she came back, I said I did not know the size of my girl-friend’s finger. So I left the shop without buying a ring.
My wife died a short while ago and the fact that I never paid for her ring has been on my conscience (良心) all these years. At the time the ring cost £2 so I reckon (估计) that is about £10 at today’s price. And I am sending you that amount.
Yours truly,
A customer

HOW TO QUIT SMOKING
When thinking about quitting (giving up)…
List all the reasons why you want to quit. Every night before going to bed, repeat one of the reasons 10 times.
Decide positively that you want to quit. Try to avoid negative(消极的) thoughts about how difficult it might be. Develop strong personal reasons in addition to your health and obligations(责任) to others. For example, think of all the time you waste taking cigarette breaks, rushing out to buy a pack, hunting for a light, etc. Set a date for quitting — perhaps a special day like your birthday or a holiday. Begin to condition yourself physically; start a modest(适度的) exercise; drink more water; get plenty of rest.
Immediately after quitting…
The first few days after you quit, spend as much free time as possible in places where smoking is prohibited(forbidden), e.g. libraries, museums, theatres, departments stores, etc.
Drink large quantities of water and fruit juice. Try to avoid wine, coffee, and other drinks which remind you of cigarette smoking.
Strike up a conversation with someone instead of a match for a cigarette.

When you are travelling, whether on business or for pleasure, you often need to stay in a hotel. The kind of hotel you choose probably is decided above all according to how much money you want to spend. There are small hotels with very few services, where the prices are low, or there are large hotels with all the very latest comforts, where you could spend all the money you have in the bank for one very comfortable night.
There are several different kinds of people who go to hotels. Some want to live, rather than just stay, in a hotel; the hotels which are designed to meet their needs are called residential hotels. However, most people who stay in hotels are either business people or tourists on holiday.
In most hotels, there are two kinds of rooms: single rooms, for the use of one person, and double rooms, for the use of two people. In addition, in large hotels, there are also suites(套房), which include two or more rooms connected together—perhaps a bed-room and a living room. They are for people who are very rich or very important.
