A study comparing prices in l50 major cities has found that cities in Western Europe have become more expensive to live in since the full introduction of the euro currency(货币).The report also noted a fall in living costs in cities where there are economic(经济的)or political problems such as Buenos Aires in Argentina and Harare in Zimbabwe. The findings are shown in the latest worldwide cost of living study conducted yearly by the Economist Intelligence Unit,a business research organization based in London. The information is meant to help big firms set payments for people working away from their home country. As in last year’s study, two Japanese cities,Tokyo and Osaka, were found to be the most expensive places to live. The report also says that cities in the euro zone(欧元区),have become more expensive relative to other places since the introduction of euro notes and coins. For example,Paris now has the tenth highest costs;it was in fourteenth place a few years ago.Berlin has gone from fiftieth to thirty.first place. Those findings will strengthen the opinion that businesses have exploited disorder over the new currency to push up their prices. But as in past years, the highest costs in Europe are outside the euro zone.London, for example,is the seventh most expensive city in the world to live in.New York, which has the highest prices in America,is in 11th place. The biggest fall in relative costs has taken place in Buenos Aims. That partly shows the fall of the Argentine currency, following the country’s inability to pay the money it owes. The cheapest major cities were found to be Tehran in Iran and Harare, capital of Zimbabwe.

(13)What is the text mainly about?

A. The economic development in Europe.

B. The results of a study.

C. Living costs outside the euro zone

D. Changes in world currencies.

(14)The Economist Intelligence Unit has tried its best to______.

A. introduce the euro to more countries

B. help people choose places to live in

C. provide information about living cost

D. offer suggestions for economic growth

(15)Some European cities have become more expensive probably because______.

A. businesses took advantage of the new currency

B. living cost dropped in non-European countries

C. economic growth slowed down in the world

D. problems occurred in other cities

(16)What can we learn from the text?

A. Buenos Aires is the cheapest city in the world.

B. Tokyo and Osaka are the most expensive cities.

C. Paris and Berlin have the highest prices in Europe.

D. London and Harare are as expensive as they were.

(13) :A 主旨题。

(15) :A细节题。从文中第二段“cities in the euro zone, have become more expensive relative to other places since the introduction of euro notes and coins”一句可以看出,一些欧洲城市生活成本增长是由于引进欧元的缘故,所以正确答案是A。

"New York City is not America. " That’s what American friends are sure to you when you ar- rive. "You must see Boston, visit Niagara Falls, go to Virginia, fly down to Florida, and so on; but first, of course, you will want to see New York. It is not the capital city of the United States(that is Washington, D.C. , where the President lives) or even the capital city of New York State(that is Albany), but many people call it ’the greatest city on earth’."

The five parts, or boroughs, of New York City are Manhattan, Queen, Bronz, Richmond and Brooklyn. Although Manhattan is not all of New York, it is the heart of the city. It is an island, which is only about 13 miles long and 2 miles wide. From the air its shape looks like a long finger, and from the sea it’s just like the picture we all know. Those tall, straight buildings--the skyscrap- ers-packed so close together on that island of rocks are sometimes seen in the distance through a veil of early morning mist. You have imagined it so often that now it’s difficult to believe this beautiful sight is real, and unless your heart is as hard as a stone, excitement will lake it beat a lit- tle faster.Perhaps "greatest", "tallest", "longest", "biggest", "brightest", are words you will find most often in the city guide books.

24.How many places in America are mentioned in this passage besides New York City?

A.6.

B.4.

C.7.

D.5.

25. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

A. Manhattan is the centre of New York City.

B. New York City is made up of five parts.

C. New York looks like a long finger from the air.

D. Manhattan is an island.

26. In the second paragraph, "excitement will make it beat a little faster" here "it" refers to________.

A. this beautiful sight

B. you

C. your heart

D. New York City

There is distinction between reading for information and reading for understanding.31 The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else.32Such materials may increase our store of information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And clearly we don’ t have any difficulty in .gaining the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started. Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement.

The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely un- derstand. Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader’ s understanding.33Otherwise one per- son could never learn from another. Here "learning" means understanding more, not remembering more information.

What are the conditions in this kind of reading? First, there is inequality in understanding.34Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack. Sec-ond, the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, success of communication is achieved.

35It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to. In fact, any book that can be read for under- standing or information can probably be read for entertainment as well.

A. The writer should have a better communicating skill.

B. Such communication between unequals must be possible.

C. We can get access to the content of those materials easily.

D. The writer must be "superior" to the reader in understanding.

E. Thus, we can employ the word "reading" in two distinct senses.

F. Reading for entertainment is capable of increasing our understanding for information.

G. Besides gaining information and understanding, there’ s another goal of reading-enter-tainment.

31.E【解析】根据第二段第一句的“The first sense is the one...”和第三段第一句的“The second sense is the one in which we…”

32.C【解析】下文中提到“Such materials may increase our store of infor-marion,but they cannot improve our understanding.”,而且选项C也提到了materials一词,故选C项。

Otherwise one person could never leam fromanother.

The writer must be“superior”to the reader in under-standing(作者必须比读者的理解力强)与本段第二句“First,thereis inequality in understanding.”
