Greenspace facilities are contributing to an important extent to the quality of the urban environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea.At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self-evident statement than on the base of a closely-reasoned scientific proof. The recognition of the importance of greenspace in the urban environment is a first step on the right way, this does not mean, however, that sufficient details are known about the functions of greenspace in towns and about the way in which the inhabitants are using these spaces. As to this rather complex subject I shall, within the scope of this lecture, enter into one aspect only, namely the recreative function of greenspace facilities.

The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town and country planning, has in my opinion resulted in disproportionate attention for forms of recreation far from, whereas there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the directneighbourhood of the home.We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working,is used for activities at and around home.So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street-door of the house. The urban environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more obligatory activities can also have a recreative aspect.

The verv best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district,if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets because the risks of traffic are too great,if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot of enjoying for a moment the nice weather,in short,if you only feel yourself at home after the street-door of your house is closed after you.

41.ACCOrding to the author, the importance of greenspace in the urban environment__________.

[A]is still unknown

[B]is being closely studied

[C]is usually neglected

[D]has been widely accepted

42.The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation has led to__________.

[A]the disproportion of recreation facilities in the neighbourhood

[B]the location of recreation facilities far from home

[C]relatively little attention for recreative possibilities

[D]the improvement of recreative possibilities in the neighbourhood

43.The author suggests that the recreative possibilities of greenspace should be provided__________.

[A]in special areas

[B]in the suburbs

[C]in the neighbourhood of the house

[D]in gardens and parks

44.According to the author, greenspace facilities should be designed in such a way that__________.

[A]more obligatory activities might take on a recreative aspect

[B]more and more people might have access to them

[C]an increasing number of recreative activities might be developed

[D]recreative activities might be brought into our homes

45.The main idea of this passage is that__________.

[A]better use of greenspace facilities should be made so as to improve the quality of our life

[B]attention must be directed to the improvement of recreative possibilities

[C]the urban environment is providing more recreation activities than it did many years ago

[D]priority must be given to the development of obligatory activities

Who’s to blame? The trail of responsibility goes beyond poor maintenance of British railways,saY industrv critics.Stingy governments—both Labor and Tory—have cut down on investments In trains and rails. In the mid-1990s a Conservative government pushed through the sale of the entire subsidy-guzzling rail network Operating franchises were parceled out among private companies and a separate firm,Ralltrack, was awarded ownership of the tracks and stations. In the future, the theory ran back then, the prtvate sector could pay for any imprDvements__________with a little help from the state__________and take the blame for any failings.

Todav surveys show that travelers believe privatization is one of the reasons for the railways tailures. They ask whether the pursuit of profits is compatible with guaranteeing safety.Worse, splitting the network between companies has made coordination nearly impossible.“The railway was tom apart at privatization and the structure that was put in place was…designed,if we are honest,to maximize the proceeds to the Treasurv,”said Railtrack boss Gerald Corbett before resigning last month in the wake of the Hatfield crash.

Generally, the contrasts with mainland Europe are stark.Over the past few decades the Germans,French and Italians have invested 50 percent more than the British in transportation infrastructure. As aresult,a web of high-speed trains now crisscrosses the Continent, funded by governments willing to commitstate funds to major capital projects.Spain is currently planning 1000 miles of new high-speed track.InFrance superfast trains already shuttle between all major cities, often on dedicated lines. And in Britain? When the Euro-star trains that link Paris,London and Brussels emerge from the Channel Tunnel onto Britishsoil and join the crowded local network, they must slow down from l86 mph to a maximum of l00 mph—and they usually have to go even slower.

For once, the government is listening. After all, commuters are voters, too. In a pre-vote spendingspree, the government has committed itself to huge investment in transportation,as well as education and thepublic health service.Over the next lo years, the railways should get an extra£60 billion, partly throughhigher subsidies to the private companies. As Blair acknowledged last month,“Britain has been underinvestedin and investment is central to Britain’s future”Yon don’t have to tell the 3 million passengers who use therailways every day.Last week trains to Darlington were an hour late__________and crawling at Locomotion N0.1speeds.

46.In the first paragraph, the author tries to__________.

[A]trace the failure of Britain’s rail network to its defective origin

[B]remind people the glorious past of Britain’s railway

[C]argue for Britain’s rail network

[D]call for impartiality in assessing the situation

47.Travelers now believe that the root cause for failures of British railway is__________.

[A]its structural design

[B]the pursuit of profit

[C]its inefficient network

[D]the lack of safety guarantees

48.According to Gerald Corbett,British railway is structured__________.

[A]for the benefit of commuters

[B]to the advantage of the government

[C]for the effect of better coordination

[D]as a replacement of the private system

49.Comparing British railway with those of Europe, the author thinks__________.

[A]trains in Britain can run at l00 mph at least

[B]Britain should build more express lines

[C]rails in Britain need further privatization

[D]British railway is left a long way behind

50.what does the author think of Blair’s acknowledgement?

[A]It’s too late to improve the situation quickly enough.

[B]It’s a welcomed declaration of commitment.

[C]Blair should preach it to other travelers.

[D]Empty words can’t solve the problem.

To paraphrase l8th-century statesman Edmund Burke, all that is needed for the triumph of a misguided cause is that good people do nothing.”0ne such cause now seeks to end biomedical research because of the theorY that animals have rights ruling out their use in research.Scientists need to respond forcefully to animal rights advocates, whose arguments are confusing the public and thereby threatening advances in health knowledge and care.Leaders of the animal rights movement target biomedical research because it depends on public funding, and few people understand the process of health care research.Heating allegations of cruelty to animals in research settings, many are perplexed that anyone would deliberately harm an animal.

For example.a grandmotherly woman staffing an animal rights booth at a recent street fair was distriburing a brochure that encouraged readers not to use anything that comes from or is tested in animals— no meat。no fur,no medicines.Asked if she opposed immunizations, she wanted to know if vaccines come from anirnal research. When assured that they d0,she replied,“Then l would have to say yes.”Asked what will happen when epidemics return, she said,“Don’t worry, scientists will find some way of using computers.” Such well-meaning people just don’t understand.

Scientists must communicate their message to the public in a compassionate, understandable way—in human terms, not in the language of molecular biology. We need to make clear the connection between animal research and a grandmother’s hip replacement,a father’s bypass operation,a baby’s vaccinations, and even a Det’s shots. To those who are unaware that animal research was needed to produce these treatments,as well as new treatments and vaccines, animal research seems wasteful at best and cruel at worst.

Much can be done.Scientists could“adopt”middle school classes and present their own research. They should be quick to respond to letters to the editor, lest animal rights misinformation go unchallenged and acquire a deceptive appearance of truth.Research institutions could be opened to tours,to show that laboratorv animals receive humane care. Finally, because the ultimate stakeholders are patients, the health research communitv should actively recruit to its cause not only well-known personalities such as Stephen Cooper, who has made courageous statements about the value of animal research, but all who receive medical treatment. If good people do nothing, there is a real possibility that an uninformed citizenry will extinguish the precious embers of medical progress.

51.The author begins his article with Edmund Burke’s words to__________.

[A]call on scientists to take some actions

[B]criticize the misguided cause of animal rights

[C]warn of the doom of biomedical research

[D]show the triumph of the animal rights movement

52.Misguided people tend to think that using an animal in research is__________.

[A]cruel but natural

[B]inhuman and unacceptable

[C]inevitable but vicious

[D]pointless and wasteful

53.The example of the grandmotherly woman is used to show the public’s__________.

[A]discontent with animal research

[B]ignorance about medical science

[C]indifference to epidemics

[D]anxiety about animal rights

54.The author believes that,in face of the challenge from animal rights advocates, scientists should__________.

[A]communicate more with the public

[B]employ hi-tech means in research

[C]feel no shame for their cause

[D]strive to develop new cures

55.From the text we learn that Stephen Cooper is——————————.

EA]a well-known humanist[B]a medical practitioner

[Clan enthusiast in animal rights[D]a supporter of animal research

Text 4

Men lie to women. At the heart of many men’s lies, however,is the male ego.Men lie to build themselves up or to conceal something. They are more likely to lie to enhance themselves than women are. Men have a hard time admitting failure. How our culture defines success is important to a man,so he assumes it’s important to his partner.

In a l991 study, psychologist William Tooke and an assistant at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh asked l lo students at the university to look at 88 deceptive tactics—such as inflating one’s accomplishments and wearing designer’s clothes to appear wealthy——and reveal how often they were used in their own relationships.Men were significantly more likely than women to use such deception. Ego-stroking statements that turn out to be total lies may be designed to cover up opposite feelings——for instance。when a man says he values his wife’s work but actually doesn’t consider it important.Such lies can sigmal serious Droblems ahead.whether jt’s dealinu with child care, vacation plans or career moves.

The more quickly a woman seeks the truth behind these lies, the sooner she can remedy the relationship—or,if necessary, end it.As one puts it:“I’d rather have the ax fall than slip down the endless slope of uncertainty and frustration.”A wife may not be sure that what her husband is saying means“the end”.She should listen closely, not only to what he says, but also to how he says it.According to Depaul, changes in voice can be significant. She has found that people’s voices often get higher or shakier when they lie,and they are more likely to stumble over words.

However, there are few things that trouble a man more than a woman’s anger—or nagging,as he calls it—so he lies to avoid a scene. It is in“hassle-prevention lying”that men can demonstrate their greatest versatility.A young man in New York City forgot his girlfriend’s birthday. When she confronted him,he claimed he’d planned a surprise all along. He grabbed the phone, called a home shopping network and berated the representative for not sending the expensive gift he’d ordered.“If you can’t do better than this,I’ll tear up my membership card!”he shouted.Of course, the man didn’t have a card and had never ordered a gift.In this book The Varnished Truth,David Nyberg, professor of education at State University of New york at Buffal0,states,“0ccasionally there is a lot to lose by telling the truth, and something to be gained:by not telling the truth.”Still.it is important to remember that lies are at heart deceptions, and repeated deceptions destroy intimacy.Real intimacy is only possible to the degree that we can be honest about what we are doing and feeling. When lying comes to predominate in a marriage, the relationship begins to deteriorate. A husband and wife can sense the trust erode, and feel their hearts growing colder.

Men,for their part, need to develop the courage to drop the defense mechanisms that bolster their egos and pride, and search for true intimacy with their mates.Telling the truth to a spouse is the first step toward showing that love is more important than lies.

56.Men have a hard time admitting failure because__________.

[A]they think their partners set much store by their success

[B]according to tradition as a man they must succeed

[C]success is important to both men and women

[D]thev are deftned as success by our cuIture

57.Men are likely than women to use deceptive tactics in their relationships to__________.

[A]present them in the best light

[B]make an impression on women

[C]conceal opposite feelings

[D]all of the above

58.All of the following are the ways women judge whether a man is telling a lie EXCEPT__________.

[A]Ithey listen to what he says attentively

[B]they watch how he says it closely

[C]he often uses a frightening voice to speak

[D]he is more likely to hesitate what to say

59.According to the passage,what is“hassle_prevention lying”(Line 2,Para.4)?

[A]A person tells a barefaced lie.

[B]A person lies to avoid a face-to-face dispute.

[C]The lies a person tells can prevent him from harm.

[D]A person tells lies to allay his anger.

60.If men do not drop their defense mechanisms and tell the truth__________.

[A]real intimacy in a marriage will be destroyed

[B]lies will become more important than love in a relationship

[C]husband and wife will divorce

[D]women will issue a serious warning to them

Section IIUse of English

21.[C]。 0n one’S way to是习惯表达,指“在去往…

仔细分析题句,可以看出,他没有那么多资金(he could not afford to finance…)显然是他不得不去寻求别人的帮助(he had to look for people…)

27.[A]。 事实上,be willing to do sth.

31.[A]。 事实上,take a chance相当于前文中已经出现了的take the risk。

由于主语是gold,而空格后的介词限定结构是of the British and the Soviet governments(英国和苏联政府的),因此明显要选property(财产)。

33.[A]。 其余三项中,benefit指“益处,好处”,它一般不与make连用;make a success指“成功”;welfare指“福利”,一般也不与make搭配。

34.[C]。 get about指“往来,流传,尽力工作”;get around指“到处走动,传播出去”;get to指“到达,接触到”; get后接from时,一般应带宾语。

get out指“出去,逃脱,出版”等义;take out指“拿出,取出,,等义;work out指“计算出,(通过努力)解决,找出”;try out指“试验,考验,提炼”。

其余三项中,that是个连接词,它不用在as前;much as指“和…几乎一样”,它后面不跟to:far后也不跟as to

41.[D]。 (Fortunately it is no longer…of this idea)及第三句中的it is generally accepted两处即可推知作者认为:尽管人们并不了解greenspace的细节作用,但它对于城市环境很重要这一点已经为人们所广泛接受,因此答案是[D]。

44.[A]。 答案对应于第二段最后一句中的后一分句....the design of these has to be…a recreative aspect,与[A]一致。

Text 2

46.[A]。 辩护)以及[D]中的impartiality(公正)、assessing(评估)都在原文中没有体现。

本题考查的是对原文第二段第四句引用Gerald Corbett的话中designed…to maximize the proceeds to the Treasury一句的理解。而理解的关键又是proceeds(收益)和Treasury(国库,财政部)两个词。

You don’t have to…who use the railways every day(你无需对每天搭乘火车的300万乘客说),言下之意很明显,那就是Blair的话是空话、废话,没有用。

Text 3

51.[A]。 Scientists need to respond forcefully to animal rights advocates,即是呼吁科学家采取行动,因此本题答案是[A]。

Such well-meaning people just don’t understand,即这些人虽然是好意,但他们不理解。

54.[A]。 Scientists must communicate their message to the public…,[A]项只是表达稍有区别。

Text 4

56.[A]。 How our culture…to his partner(我们的文化如何定义“成功”这一点对男人很重要,因此男人认为这对其伴侣也很重要),因此本题选[A]。it指success;[A]项中的 set store by意为“看重”。

其中第四句(She shouldlisten…howhe saysit)提到了[A]、[B],第六句(She hasfoundthat…stumble overwords)指出了[D]项。

本句是一个很长的简单句,主干是The family has changed,其后的介词结构from…t0… 其中属于from这一部分的under…the father和having…emotional ties是an economically defined unit的两个并列后置定语;属于t0这一部分的with…是a unit的介词后置定语,而directed by…and children则是strong emotional ties的分词后置定语。

本题考查的主要是对the more…the more… 词汇方面,educational attainment指的是“受教育程度”,stay in the labor force可译为“从业,工作”。

在结构上,句子主干是Weitz points out,后面的that引导的是一个宾语从句,其中又含有一个not only…but also…

Family planning is one of the basic policies of our country. It aims at controlling the fast growing population.Nowadays we already have 1.3 billion people,a number which is about to become too big for the country to support. In this circumstance, family planning policy should be firmly implemented.

But as we have more and more one-child households, family relations have changed.Too much care is no good for the child’S development. He will grow up to think that he is the center of the society and that everyone should care for him and obey his wishes. He will become selfish and selbcentered. And a child growing up in a rich and sheltered condition will have little psychological strength for difficulties and failures.Problems like these have not yet received full attention from our society and our educational system.

I suggest that parents try to cultivate a healthy mind in their children.Parents should talk to their children about the problems they may have and let them understand what life is really like. They should try to teach their children to care for others and cultivate a spirit of cooperation.Only in this way can the only child grow up into a healthy adult.
