此语与“蛋”可说没什么直接联系，其中eggs很可能系数学公式中x的讹误。它原作as sure as x is x，17世纪后始作(as)sure as eggs is eggs。有时亦作(as)sure aseggs are eggs。这条成语1699年在英国北部地区首先使用。
