VII. Reading Comprehension: 10%(阅读与理解,10分)
Passage 1
The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon (结肠). Different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic of these cultures.
That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that some food additives might cause cancer. Yet, for many reasons, these additives still remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

B. Some of the additives in our food are added to the food itself and some are given to the living animals.
C. Researchers have known about the potential hazards of food additives for over 65 years.
D. Food may cause forty percent of cancer in the world.
Passage 2
How men first learnt to invent words is unknown, in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feeling, action, and things, so that they could communicate with each other. And later, they agreed upon certain signs, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written, we call words.
The power of words lies in their associations with the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience. The longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past. The more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.
( )1.The origin of language is _________.
A. a legend handed down from the past
B. a matter that is hidden
C. a question that is difficult to answer
D. a puzzle not yet solved
( )2.One of the reasons why men invented certain sounds to express thoughts and action was that _________.
A. they could agree upon certain signs
B. they could write them down
C. they could communicate with each other
D. they could combine them
( )3.What is true about the words?
A. They are used to express feeling only.
B. They can be said and written.
C. They did not originate from signs.
D. They are mysterious.
( )4.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. The more we read and learn, the gladder we are.
B. The more we read and learn, the more learned we are.
C. The longer we live, the cleverer we are.
D. The longer we live, the more words we know.
( )5.According to the passage, in expressing their thoughts, great writer are able to ____.
A. move our actions
B. speak powerfully
C. arouse our feelings
