Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq 

    BAGHDAD, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. soldier has been killed by small arms fire in the Iraqi capital, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.

    The soldier was killed Tuesday during combat operations in eastern Baghdad, the military said in a statement.

    Earlier, the military said that another soldier was killed on Tuesday when a roadside bomb blew up near his vehicle in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad.

    The latest death brings the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed in Iraq to about 3,800 since the outbreak of the Iraqi war in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
